Frequently Asked Questions

WHY IS VISITING THE DENTIST REGULARLY IMPORTANT?
Visiting the dentist will not only help to keep your teeth and  mouth healthy, but will also help to keep the rest of your body healthy.  More and more scientific studies are being published showing the link between a healthy mouth and a healthy life.
MY TEETH FEEL FINE; WHY DO I NEED TO SEE THE DENTIST?
Your teeth may feel fine, but it is still important to have regular exams.  Many dental problems can start without you knowing.  Cavities and gum disease can both begin and progress with little or no symptoms.  Many times, if you wait until something hurts, you have increased the costs and time involved in saving your teeth.
HOW CAN I TAKE CARE OF MY TEETH AT HOME?
Excellent home care is essential to keeping your teeth healthy and beautiful.  Always brush your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.  Dr. April recommends the use of a soft bristled toothbrush or a quality electric brush.  Flossing daily is key to preventing gum disease and cavities between the teeth.  Use of a fluoride rinse at night before bed can help reduce temperature  sensitivity and, more importantly, strengthen the enamel of your teeth and its resistance to bacteria acids that cause cavities.
Avoid foods with a lot of sugar.  Especially dangerous are the popular sport and energy drinks.  Dr. April encourages patients to read the labels and be cautious of products containing sugar as one of the first four ingredients.
Don't use tobacco products.  These can stain your teeth, contribute to gum disease and increase your risk of developing oral cancer.
MY MEDICAL DOCTOR HAS RECOMMENDED I TAKE AN ANTIBIOTIC BEFORE GOING TO THE DENTIST?
If you have had a joint replacement surgery, the current recommendation is that you take a prophylactic dose of an antibiotic prior to invasive dental procedures.  The prescription can be provided by your MD or your DDS.  Not all visits to the dentist require this, so please ask prior to your appointment if it is needed.  Some heart conditions also have an antibiotic recommendation prior to invasive dental procedures.  Your MD and DDS can advise you.

HOW MUCH WILL MY DENTISTRY COST?
Every treatment option has various benefits and alternatives.  Cost can be an important question for many patients.  We will do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the cost of your options and what, if any, your insurance will contribute to your care.  We understand that in these difficult economic times, dental care can be pushed to the end of the line.  We are committed to helping you achieve your dental goals in a financially respectful and understanding manner.
